Medical Office Design Layout: 4 Tips to Keep In Mind

Medical Office Design Layout: 4 Tips to Keep In Mind

February 10, 2023 - Arminco Inc.

Given that the healthcare market is worth over $7 trillion, it’s no secret that medical companies are thriving. As people become more aware of the importance of preventative care, they will continue to see healthcare providers like you. And as a professional, you want your clients to feel relaxed when they visit.

A patient who feels comfortable is more likely to visit your office again and recommend you to others.

This means that office design layout is more important than ever before. You must create a beautiful yet efficient space where patients can feel at ease while being treated. Let’s look at some of the most important things you need to consider when designing your office.

1. Upscale Waiting Rooms

If you only think of waiting rooms as a place for patients to pass the time, you’re missing out on an enormous opportunity to impress your patients. Waiting rooms are one of the first places that people see when they enter your office. It’s important to make them look as polished as possible.

Most medical offices have chosen a modern interior design style. It reflects that the healthcare provider is up-to-date on the latest trends. If you want to follow suit, tell your architects you want clean lines emphasized in the building designs.

2. Prioritize Traffic Flow

You don’t want too many obstacles in the way of your employees or patients. When designing hallways, ensure that there is enough room on the path for a few people to walk side by side, without feeling cramped.

For exam rooms, there should be separate exits and entryways. This will prevent patients from backing up the hallway when they come out of an exam room.

Signage is also important. Have signs with large, clear letters that point out restrooms and other amenities so everyone can find what they’re looking for quickly.

3. Exam Rooms

The exam room should be set up in such a way that it provides easy access to all tools and equipment. The storage cabinets shouldn’t be too high or too far away from the exam table.

Make sure there are enough cupboards for all your medical equipment. You don’t want to store an ultrasound device in the same cabinet as paper towels and cleaning supplies.

The light source needs to be indirect so it doesn’t shine in patients’ eyes while they’re lying on the examination table. Direct lighting creates “hot spots” where the intensity can be unpleasant.

4. Privacy

Give patients their own private room if possible. If this isn’t practical due to space limitations, consider offering semi-private rooms where two people share one room with dividers between them.

Add soundproofing materials to walls as well. This will ensure that conversations aren’t overheard by others outside the room. If your patients feel secure in the examination room, they’ll be more likely to open up and discuss their medical issues.

These tips should help you create a beautiful and functional office design layout that patients will love.
