Pediatric Dental Office Design: Creating a Kid-Friendly Waiting Room

Pediatric Dental Office Design: Creating a Kid-Friendly Waiting Room

March 11, 2022 - Arminco Inc.

Did you know that about 50% of people with significant dental anxiety developed it during their childhood? This means that it's your job as a pediatric dentist to make sure that the children that you serve are comfortable and have good experiences to help mitigate that problem.

The first thing that children will see when they enter your office is the design of your waiting room. Good pediatric dental office design is crucial.

But how can you make your pediatric dental office as non-threatening as possible? We're here to talk about it.

Read on for a few dental office design tips.

Pick the Right Furniture

in a standard dentist's or doctor's office, it's normal to have a single chair design and for those chairs to be scattered throughout the waiting room or arranged in rows. When you're trying to design a pediatric dentist's office waiting room, however, this isn't the best choice.

We recommend incorporating child-sized furniture alongside your standard furniture. Children know that this furniture is "for them" and they may feel more comfortable using it.

It's also a good idea to make sure that furniture arrangements allow children to sit with their parents. Couches and loveseats are great for this. You can also place chairs in small groupings that face each other.

Use Welcoming Colors and Designs

Many standard dentist's offices use neutral tones and basic art on the walls. When you're designing with children in mind, you have to stray away from this and think outside of the box.

Use color. You don't have to use bright and aggressive colors on all of your walls, but blue and turquoise are great options. They're calming and bright enough to make children feel more "at home" in your pediatric dental office.

Make sure that you also use child-friendly art. Consider turning one of the walls into a statement wall by commissioning a mural.

Provide Toys and Entertainment

Children need entertainment when they're in the waiting room. It's a good idea to include toys, games, child-friendly books, and even paper and crayons. Encourage children to make drawings and place those drawings on the wall.

Make sure that you sanitize the toys every day. Children are messy and you want to avoid spreading illness.

It's also a good idea to place television screens in places where the children can see them. Put on popular children's shows or movies to keep the children calm while they're waiting for their appointments.
